The Great Barrier Reef is a 47-minute musical special set in the Octonauts continuity. It premiered on Netflix on October 13, 2020. The special focuses on the Octonauts aiming to protect the Great Barrier Reef from a swarm of hungry Crown of Thorns Starfish, with the help of many native creatures, and some new friends.
Summary[]
The special starts out with a close-up look at Earth, the Octo Satellite passes by beeping its sonar noises. We then zoom down, where we’re greeted by the Great Barrier Reef. We’re soon introduced to Corey, a small coral polyp, who’s trying to find his spot on the reef, but just can’t find it, and talks about how despite his small size, he will find his place (Little Bit).
Just as Corey’s about to finish his song, he is knocked into a giant object, which is revealed to be the Gup-W, with Captain Barnacles driving it. He notices Corey stuck, and calls for Tweak to land the Gup. As they do so, they cause Clovis and Laverne, a carrier crab and sea-sponge, to run away. Peso comes out and frees Corey, where he introduces himself to him and Barnacles. The two show Corey around the Gup-W, where they show Tweak working on the bubble filters to help keep the water clean and the coral healthy, Professor Inkling working on algae gardens for fish and a sick-bay, with a nurse and bandage bot. Corey then explains to Barnacles and Peso how he can’t find his spot on the reef, and Barnacles promises to help him find the right location. Just as he does, Clovis and Laverne come back and introduce themselves to the three of them, and begin explaining to Corey how he just needs to look around (Location). They also introduce Lamar, Damar and Jamar, three worms who live inside Laverne. The group eventually find a good spot for Corey, which happens to be right near the Gup-W. Clovis and Laverne then take off, as Barnacles goes to help Tweak with the bubble filters, and Peso gives Corey a check-up (Forming the coral reef).
After the check-up, Peso goes back to the Gup-W, but as he does so, the Gup-W is attacked by tentacles, which are revealed to be coming from Mound Coral, a, well, mound coral, who uses his “sweeper tentacles” to protect his space on the reef. Whilst Barnacles and Corey re-assure him they won’t cause trouble, Mound Coral isn't so sure about it, as he explains to them how he’s lived on the reef long enough to know there’s always danger lurking around it (Trouble on the reef). All of a sudden, Clovis and Laverne return back, revealing a large spike stuck in Laverne. Peso immediately heads off to the Gup-W, and soon heals Laverne. Barnacles asks how exactly they got spiked in the first place, and Clovis explains how he was in a hurry side-stepping along coral, when Laverne bumped into something sharp, the only problem is that none of them knew what hit them, not even the worms.
After helping Laverne, Kwazii reports in. Revealing he and Tunip are working on a surprise when everyone returns. Kwazii then goes to the secret door in his room, and unlocks it, grabbing a scroll and heading off to the kitchen with Tunip. So that they and the other Vegimals could make “Pirate Pie”, a pie, which recipe is only known to Kwazii’s Grand-Dad (♪ Making Pirate Pie ♪). Kwazii then leaves to get a secret ingredient whilst the Vegimals continue making the pie.
Back at the reef, Dashi and Shellington call in, revealing that they found a patch of sick coral. Peso heads off on the Gup-P to assist. When the three get back to where the coral was found, they encounter a Watchman Gobi and Blind Shrimp. Two friends who keep each other safe, with the Gobi's great eyesight, and the Shrimp burrowing holes for them to hide in. Due to his great eye-sight, the Gobi saw exactly what happened, and explains that he saw three spikey creatures crawl on the coral, with it becoming sick once they all got off. He also recognises a spike belonging to said creatures, which Shellington found near the coral. Kwazii then shows up to get the secret ingredient, and is informed about the sick coral. Noticing the spike Shellington had picked up, Kwazii is under the belief that a Sea Monster had made the coral sick (Sea Monster from the Brimey Blue). But Shellington corrects him, believing it was a Crown of Thorns Starfish that did it, which scares the Gobi and Shrimp into hiding. They all return to the Gup-W, and Shellington explains that it's pretty normal for a small group of starfish to be on the reef. However, if too many were to enter the reef, it would be considered an 'outbreak', something Inkling fears would destroy The Great Barrier Reef, if it were to occur.
Everyone (Minus Inkling) head off to ask the creatures if they’ve seen the starfish, to no avail. This is when Kwazii notices another spike and he, Barnacles and Peso discover an army of Crown of Thorns Starfish, who are planning to invade the reef and eat it (Tasty Reef). Barnacles sounds the Octo Alert, but just as he’s about to explain what they need to do, they're confronted by several reef creatures, all led by Clovis and Laverne, who want to know what's happening. Barnacles ends up telling them about the Crown of Thorns Starfish, causing everyone to panic, and for Clovis and Laverne to reveal that if they're home is destroyed, then everyone has to leave. Mound Coral even reveals that he's not safe, as despite his sweeper tentacles, coral like him are unable to protect themselves from Crown of Thorns Starfish.
Barnacles comes up with a plan to feed the starfish something else, other than the coral, which is when Kwazii tells him about the Pirate Pie, revealing that coral slime is its secret ingredient. Everyone then sets up a plan where Tunip and the Vegimals bake many pirate pies to feed the starfish, as everyone else fights off the starfish until their ready. Barnacles goes with the sea-squirts and giant clams to fire bubbles at the starfish, Inkling, some octopie and scuttlefishs will squirt ink to blind the starfish, Kwazii and a group of guard crabs will fight the starfish themselves, and Peso, the bots and sea-cucumbers will use bubbles and snot to stop them (A Thousand Pies).
Late at night, the Gobi sees all the Starfish approaching and tells the Shrimp to scurry to Barnacles and warn him. He does so, and everyone prepares to fight off the starfish. Barnacles, the Sea Squirts and Giant Clams have no problem fighting off the Starfish, using the bubbles to make them back off. However, Inkling, Kwazii and Peso have some issues, but Barnacles comes to their rescue. Peso is also spiked by one of the Starfish as he narrowly saves Corey from being eaten, with Clovis pulling out the spikes (paying homage to how Peso helped him and Laverne). Everyone then re-groups, as the Starfish return once more. But in the nick of time, the Vegimals, Tweak, Dashi and Shellington come back and, with the help of the Pirate Pies, finally get the Starfish to back-off.
The next day, Barnacles congratulates everyone for their hard work, and the Bubble Filters finally begin working. Corey, then finally turns into a full coral (Forming the Coral Reef (Reprise)), and soon meets a small fish, who is almost like him when we first met him. And Corey soon explains to him how despite him being small, he will find a way to fit in (Little Bit (Reprise)). The special ends with a zoom out back into space, where we can now see a Vegimal (presumably Albachoy) waving to us as the octo satellite beeps its sonar again when we zoom out of planet earth, as the screen fades to black, and the credits roll.

Trivia[]
- This special is the first musical special of Octonauts.
- This marks the debut of the Gup-W and Gup-P.
- This special shows how a coral reef is formed and how it grows.
- This might be in some ways based on the corona-virus outbreak.
- Despite the special appearing to be based on the 2015 Australian stage show called Operation Reef Shield, this has been proven false. The animated musical was already in production when they were approached to allow the stage play to be based off of their earlier scripts.
- This special marks the first time in the franchise, where Peso is stung by a venomous creature. Plus, the second time he displayed true courage when he put himself in harm's way in order to protect Corey from one of the starfish.
- This special reveals what's inside Kwazii's secret door, in his room, which was featured in multiple episodes, yet never opened, until this special.
- Moral: Everyone has a place in the world, no matter how big or small you are. (or as referenced by Corey, "Every little bit can find a way to fit".)
- Despite being a Mound Coral. Mound Coral looks more like a Bubble Coral than it's real life counterpart.
- A major plot hole in the special, is that it’s never explained why all the creatures went to the Octonauts in order to find out what's going on, after the Octo-Alert sequence. It’s possible that off-screen, they all saw the Octonauts rushing to the Gup-W, and believing something was wrong, followed them to find out what was happening.
- Kwazii is shown riding the Gup-P in an image on the Netflix menu when selecting the special. Despite this, he never uses the gup.
