The Octoray is a new Gup primarily seen in the Above & Beyond spin-off series, debuting in Above & Beyond’s first season. The Gup was first introduced in the first initial poster relating to the spin-off in English. The name was confirmed and announced on the Octonauts Instagram page captioning "Introducing... The Octoray! The Octonauts are using a NEW airborne ship to access terrestrial missions. This MANTA RAY based vehicle serves as a jet, transporter, and remote base for longer missions! It can be launched from underwater, and is very agile in the air, often skimming the tree line during rescues." The new Gup is the 3rd official Gup to be able to fly across air, water and land along with the Gup-H and Gup-X.

Dashi is the primary operator of this Gup. However, other characters such as Captain Barnacles in The Puffin Colony, or Professor Natquik in The Antarctica Rescue, are seen operating the vehicle. Shellington operates in The Mimics.

In The Flying Foxes, it crashed for the first time as the engines overheated, causing the engines, electrical systems, and air conditioning to fail, hence making the cabin too hot, forcing Dashi and Peso to sleep on the roof in the desert overnight.

Despite being a new Gup, it is more like an oversized helicopter for the Octonauts, and despite being a large aircraft vehicle, it is almost as large as the Octopod. This theory has not been proven. Although the Octoray more likely resembles a hovering airplane rather then just a helicopter.

In The Giant Carp, Periwinkle uses the claw to grab Carl the Carp to try and stop him from eating all the grass, but he jumps out. They still managed to get Carl out of the Great Lakes and fly him back to his natural habitat in Asia.

In The Mountain Parrots, a pair of Kea Birds become curious of the ship and get into everything which ends up making a mess. They even accidentally tamper with the rotor but managed to help fix it before the rotor failed.

In The Monarch Butterflies, the Octoray proved its capabilities after protecting the titular butterflies from a tornado, and followed the swarm to Mexico.

Trivia[]

  • It's the second largest vehicle in service with the Octonauts in the series, only being beaten by the Octopod.
  • It's the largest of all the Terra Gups built so far.
  • It's the only Terra Gup that can fly so far.
  • It's the 3rd Gup that can fly (behind the Gup-X and Gup-H)
  • The Octoray may be based off in word and it's base. The Octoray resembles an Osprey, A hovering vehicle that has propellers that goes forwards and upwards. Osprey sounds similar to Octo-ray. It's possible that the Octonauts creators used Osprey, then combined and changed it to Octo-Ray. This may be how and why it is called the Octo-Ray.
  • Octoray's headlights are normally turned off. However, in the Journey To China series, Octoray has its headlights turned on. Sometimes, in some scenes, its headlights are turned off, but that is very uncommon in JTC; strangely, in a few episodes, the Octoray's headlights are green, not yellow. It sometimes has a black border in its headlights, which is quite thick.
