Puffins are birds that live and fly in cold regions on earth like Iceland. They have large, orange beaks they use to carry sand eels and to help them gape (opening their beaks wide and spreading their wings to make them look big to attackers). They make their burrows in the ground to hide from predators and keep their eggs warm. They can fly far distances to find food, but if they fly too far and for too long, they get too tired and cannot fly back to their colonies. Part of this is because the sea started getting slightly warmer, and the sand eels they feed on moved father out to cooler parts of the sea.
In Octonauts: Above and Beyond, in the episode The Puffin Colony, Peso Penguin and Tunip the Vegimal help make formula from the Fish biscuits to feed the hungry pufflings. They soon find an egg all alone in a burrow and were told that it never hatched because there was no chick in it. But Peso heard a heartbeat, indicating that the egg did have a chick in it and would hatch soon. While Captain Barnacles and Tunip went to look for the missing parents, who went out looking for sand eels, Peso kept the egg warm while Kwazii fended off a hungry gull. He succeeded, but the gull hurt his wing after he crashed into a rock, so while Peso fixed it and fed him a fish biscuit, Kwazii got to hold the egg and keep it warm. Once the captain brought back the missing parents, the egg hatched thinking Kwazii was her mommy. Peso redirected her to her real parents, and Kwazii bid farewell to the puffling and she did a backflip.
