”The Octonauts and the Fig Fiasco” is an episode of the Above & Beyond spin-off series' fifth season.
Plot[]
The episode begins in a rainforest in Borneo. Selva and Tunip are using the Terra-Gup 5 to explore a tree with vines growing on around it, each vine growing Strangler figs. Tunip attempts to gather some Strangler figs, but other animals keep taking them. Shellington and Dashi are in another part of the rainforest, and they spot a hornbill flying. Dashi attempts to use the Octo-mite to track the hornbill but loses it after it flies through some leaves. In a third part of the rainforest, near the hornbill's nest above a Rafflesia flower, Haraka and Paani arrive, with Haraka's goal being to teach Paani how to brachiate, or swing through trees. Haraka shows Paani a gibbon as an example, but Paani has some trouble on the first try.
As Shellington and Dashi come across the hornbill, Dashi again attempts to track it with the Octo-mite, but the gibbon swings into it, accidentally almost breaking it. Haraka accidentally bumps into Shellington, and Paani catches up. Using the footage from the Octo-mite, Haraka shows Paani how the gibbon uses his long arms and timing to effectively swing through the tree branches. They group follows the hornbill and gibbon to the large tree and meet up with Tunip and Selva. The greedy gibbon keeps stealing all the Strangler figs, knocking the hornbill to the ground, breaking his wing in the process. Haraka sounds the Octo-alert.
At the Octopod, Captain Barnacles, Peso, and Professor Inkling answer as the group explains the situation. Professor Inkling explains that Strangler figs grow only once a year, and animals will often get aggressive in trying to get them. Captain Barnacles deploys Peso in the Terra-Gup 10 to help the hornbill. Soon, all the Strangler figs are gone, but the gibbon is still hungry. Upon hearing the hornbill mention his nest, the gibbon starts brachiating over to the nest to eat the egg. The hornbill tells the group that his nest is located above a very large flower. Selva recognizes this as the Rafflesia flower, and Paani remembers he parked his paddleboard there. Paani begins brachiating after the gibbon using grappling hooks while Haraka runs after it.
As Peso arrives to the rest of the group in the Terra-Gup 10 and bandages the hornbill's wing, Haraka and the gibbon make it to nest, but Haraka is unable to climb. Luckily, Paani stops just in time to stop the gibbon. Haraka directs the gibbon's attention to some Katuk leaves across a stream, which the gibbon eats. The rest of the group arrives the Terra-Gup 10, but Peso tells the hornbill it will be a while before he can fly again. Tunip gives the hornbill some of the Strangler figs he collected, and the episode ends with Dashi and Shellington using the Octo-mite to record the baby hornbill hatching.
