The Hippos is in Season 4, episode 9 of the Octonauts. It is the part after the Kelp Monster Mystery.

Plot[]

Returning home from an African river, Kwazii, Peso, Barnacles, and Shellington have trouble returning home to the ocean after they greet a gang of large, territorial hippos. After waking them up from a sleep after a long night of grazing on grass in the jungle, the hippos damage parts of the Gups and chase them out of their home territory. Kwazii makes the hippos chase him through the jungle and as they were leaving, but they find out the hippos feel very hot and uncomfortable after their skin dries out from the hot sun. Peso tells them they can't leave them like that, so before leaving, the Octonauts use the Gup-A's rudder to spray mud at the hippos to cool them off, and the hippos return the favor and cool Kwazii and the Octonauts off with mud as well!

Synopsis[]

Research Mission[]

Late at night, Shellington exits the Octopod in the Gup-E, excited to head up the river for his mission to observe the African river creatures at night. On the radio, Barnacles says its very exciting and tells Shellington to say safe. Afterwards, Barnacles tells Dashi to power down for the night and the other Octonauts say goodnight to each other.

Alert![]

As morning begins to arrive, the Octo-Alert suddenly goes off, alerting Barnacles, who tells the Octonauts to go to HQ. In the HQ, the Octonauts are confused on who sounded the Octo-Alert when Dashi says its Shellington and the alert is coming from the river. They try to contact Shellington through the radio but they hear a strange growling noise over the radio. Thinking Shellington is in danger, Barnacles, Kwazii, and Peso head to the river to rescue him. Upon reaching the river, they decide to head out on foot. The three Octonauts uncover some reeds only to see that it was Shellington sleeping this whole time. Barnacles, Kwazii, and Peso all yell "Shellington!" and he wakes up. Shellington asks what they're doing and he realizes he fell asleep while watching the nighttime creatures, but didn't know he fell asleep on the Octo-Alert button. The other Octonauts laugh at him and Barnacles tells Shellington to try not to fall asleep on the Octo-Alert button. Shellington realizes this and deactivates the button, and Barnacles says they should head back home.

Panic at the River[]

As the Octonauts drive through the river, Kwazii says that it looks like it will be a beautiful day, remarking on the bright sun and the "peaceful" rivers when all of a sudden, a bunch of creatures swim away as if they're in a panic. A catfish tells the Octonauts to turn back while they can and there are some "really scary guys" up head. Barnacles asks what sort of scary guys are they running from and Kwazii uses his spyglass and sees crocodiles. Barnacles replies that the crocodiles seemed to be minding their own business. Suddenly, the ground begins to rumble and two trees fall to the ground, the crocodiles scurry to safety, telling the Octonauts that they "better beat it" and "here they come". The Octonauts drive their Gups behind some reeds and they see hippos coming from the jungle and into the river. Kwazii says that they're "slowcoaches" and Peso replies that they're "kind of sweet". Shellington says that they might look that way but they can be very dangerous, as a hippo crushes a log.

Attempting to escape from the Hippos: Part 1[]

The Octonauts carefully drive through the hippos but one gets in the way. Barnacles tells Shellington to turn hard-left, but Shellington fails to do so and ends up nudging the hippo. The hippo doesn't wake up and Shellington lets off a relieving sigh when suddenly, the hippo opens its eyes. The other hippos also wake up and chase the Gups through the river. One hippo bites off a chunk of the Gup-E's rudder off but the Octonauts manage to escape. Peso asks Shellington why the hippos are not chasing them anymore and Shellington replies that the part of the river they were in is their territory and the part of the river they're in now is not. Barnacles then says that if they went back the same way, the hippos would attack them again. Kwazii says that they can't stay there all day and to wait until they leave. Shellington says they can and they often do, when Peso confusedly asks that the hippos must take a lunch break. Shellington says that hippos are nocturnal feeders, and that they stay in or around the river all day, leaving the river at night to eat in the jungle. It is revealed a hippo's skin may look tough, but its very sensitive to the sun and can get very uncomfortable if it gets too dry. Peso suggests they should wait until nighttime, but Barnacles replies that the Gups have taken a lot of damage and might not be working by nighttime. Peso asks how will they get past them and Kwazii says to let him handle it.

Attempting to escape from the Hippos: Part 2[]

Kwazii runs up to the riverbank, where the Hippos are resting, and calls them "lazy" and taunts them to "come get him". The hippos are not pleased by this and they decide to show Kwazii whos "lazier" and chase after Kwazii. During the chase, Kwazii keeps taunting them to chase him and leaps across some trees and logs saying that its not even a contests and calling the hippos "slowcoaches". Kwazii keeps running and realizes that the hippos are faster than he thought. The other Octonauts are almost out of the hippos territories when the Gup-E loses its rudder, Peso attaches an improvised towline with his bandages. Back in the jungle, the hippos have cornered Kwazii and they taunt him saying, "no escape now ya, unless maybe...you can fly" and start laughing. Kwazii grabs onto a vine and swings his way into the Gup-A and they drive away.

Helping the Hippos[]

Shellington notices that the hippos spent too much time in the hot sun and their skin is all dried out. Peso says that they can't leave them like that and suggests a remedy for dry hippo skin; mud. As the Octonauts come back, they use Gup-A's propeller to propel some mud onto the hippo's dry skin. The hippos thank them for the mud and Kwazii tells the hippos to not chase him when they see him again. The hippos say that they don't usually like strangers on their turf, but they accept the Octonauts. One hippo says that they should return the favor and cool Kwazii and the Octonauts off, the hippos hop into the mud and use their tails to splash mud on Kwazii and the Octonauts. Kwazii is surprised but then has second thoughts, saying that it does feel good and that he's as cool as a hippo in mud.

Trivia[]

  • Near the beginning of the episode, it seemed that the Octo-Alert was sounded offscreen, but when the Octonauts went up the river, it turned out to be Shellington due to him sleeping on it.
  • This is the first large aquatic mammal not to be a whale, or seal, since hippos are mostly into water, but at night they come onto land when its cold enough to eat.
