”The Octonauts and the Quokkas” is an episode of the Above & Beyond spin-off series' fifth season.
Plot[]
The episode begins with Kwazii and Tweak arriving on Rottnest Island in the Terra-Gup 1. As they begin setting up a weather station, they are approached by a pair of curious quokkas. Tweak contacts Shellington on her Octo-watch, who tells the duo that quokkas are marsupials and one of very few animals that don't have native predators. After Shellington uncomfortably explains what a predator is to the quokkas, they claim they are mad, though it doesn't show through their big teeth and relaxed facial muscles. Suddenly, the Octo-alert sounds.
The Octo-alert was sounded by Professor Inkling, who joins Captain Barnacles, Peso, Dashi, Shellington, and Tunip in the Octopod's HQ. Professor Inkling explains that there is a very large, elephant-sized meteor heading straight for Rottnest Island. The quokkas overhear this but don't show much concern, due to animals without native predators usually being unaware to danger. Captain Barnacles sends everyone to Rottnest Island to evacuate the creatures. The Octonauts arrive in the Octo-ray, Gup-A, Gup-X, and Terra-Gup 10. As Shellington clears the aquatic animals from the island in the Gup-A, the others gather up the land animals in the other gups.
Soon, it is nighttime, and the meteor is dangerously close. Most of the animals have been safely collected in the gups, but Kwazii is having trouble getting the quokkas to listen to reason. Captain Barnacles contacts Tweak and Professor Inkling about an alternate solution. While Professor Inkling says nothing can be done to stop the meteor from falling, Tweak suggests the meteor does not necessarily have to land on Rottnest Island. This gives Captain Barnacles an idea: if he can disconnect the Gup-X's glider and shoot it at the meteor at exactly the right speed and angle, he can force the meteor to land in the ocean. After confirming with Shellington the aquatic animals are cleared, he has Tweak evacuate the creatures in the Gup-X to safety as he disconnects the glider and flies for the meteor.
As the Octonauts head to safety in the ocean, Kwazii finally manages to convince the quokkas to evacuate. While Kwazii runs to the coast, Captain Barnacles manages to divert the meteor's trajectory towards the ocean, and it lands in the water without hurting anyone, including Kwazii and the quokkas. However, the Gup-X's glider crash lands into the ocean. The Octonauts are nervous about Captain Barnacles, but luckily, he emerges unharmed. The episode ends with the Octonauts returning the creatures to Rottnest Island, and Shellington taking a picture of a legless lizard, though the quokkas photobomb it.
