The Great Barrier Reef stretched endlessly beneath the ocean’s surface, a kaleidoscope of colors and life hidden just out of sight. Inside the Octopod, the hum of machinery was a steady heartbeat, mixing with the distant clicks and whistles of the reef’s inhabitants. Captain Barnacles stood tall and steady as always, his white fur sleek and damp from the day’s early patrols. Beside him, Joey Hoskins fiddled nervously with his helmet, the phrase “Cheese and crackers” slipping from his lips more than once as he prepared for the mission ahead. “Barnacles,” Joey said quietly, voice barely above the sound of filtered water, “I hope this thing’s shark-proof.” Barnacles gave him a slow, reassuring nod. “Stay close. Stay calm. We’ll get through this.” The mission was simple enough on paper: return a baby octopus, found alone near the coral, to its mother. But the reef had been restless lately. The Sharks—a ruthless gang of real, scarred predators—had been spotted prowling the edges of the territory, their eyes always watching. As the two slipped from the Octopod into the cool blue depths, the water enveloped them in silence, broken only by their own breath and the faint movements of sea life. Finding the baby octopus wasn’t difficult; it was small and trembling, hiding beneath a cluster of coral like a secret waiting to be uncovered. The tiny creature seemed to sense safety when Joey reached out, and without hesitation, it curled its soft arms around the inside of his helmet. Joey’s breath hitched, but he forced a smile. “Okay, little guy,” he whispered. “You’re lucky I’m a human backpack today.” Unbeknownst to them, a dark shadow circled in the distance. The Sharks had found their trail. Soon, they located the mother octopus nestled in a cavernous alcove, her tentacles weaving slowly through the water. The reunion was quiet but touching—the baby gently slid from Joey’s helmet into her mother’s embrace. Barnacles felt something in his chest loosen, a warmth he rarely showed. Joey’s smile was genuine, shining like a rare jewel. But peace was fleeting. A ripple disturbed the water. Shapes appeared—sleek, menacing—gliding closer with predatory intent. The Sharks had arrived. Barnacles’ calm shifted instantly to alertness. “Hide. Stay quiet.” They pressed themselves against the cavern walls, heartbeats pounding louder in Joey’s ears. Panic swelled inside him until he barely whispered, “Cheese and crackers… I’m not ready for this.” Barnacles, voice low and steady, replied, “You’re doing better than you think.” But the sharks closed in, their growls vibrating through the water. Barnacles made a snap decision—he’d create a distraction. Joey, wide-eyed, pulled a sonic flare from his utility belt and activated it, the piercing light and sound slicing through the murky gloom. The chase was on. Joey’s helmet cracked against a jagged rock, but he barely noticed, adrenaline surging as he darted through the reef, the sharks snapping behind him. Barnacles’ strategy and Joey’s quick instincts worked together in a delicate dance—each movement measured, each escape barely earned. “Bye bye bye, you sea bullies!” Joey shouted, laughter breaking through the tension. Finally, the sharks retreated, deciding the fight wasn’t worth the risk. Back at the Octopod, the air was thick with relief. Inkling praised them quietly, and Peso fussed over Joey’s cracked helmet like a mother hen. Joey cracked a joke to ease the tension, and for a moment, Barnacles almost smiled. Later, the two stood side by side, gazing out at the endless reef, the gentle glow of the Octopod behind them. No words were needed.

Joey was born on August 17th, with a abusive family. When he was 19, he had enough of his abusive family, and ran away from home, with the family chasing him. Unfortunately, he had gotten hit by a car, giving him amnesia. Hours later, he woke up in the base of the Octonauts crew. He was very confused, mostly with them talking, as they are animals. He then joined the crew soon.
